no worries! have a great time there – i am a bit jealous ofcourse 🙂
January 29, 2019 at 1:49 am #9281Sorry it took so long. 🙂
So see-saw/FF target needs some more precision at this point. Have her stop on the target and stay there, until you tell her it is ok to go. Only feed her if she is standing on the plank, with her FF on the target. As long as she stays in this position you can keep throwing treats for her. If she jumps off, send her back in position and until she gets there, no new treats. When she gets it and stays in position nicely, you can start backchaining getting in position. Starting her on the plank, just a step or two away from the target and than gradually further and further back. Until finally she runs all the way up on a plank and stay there.
In separate sessions you can do the “jump on” game you can see in lesson 3.Cik&cap – nice! Yes she was confused by the wing, I think because she was trying to get around the cone and the wing was stopping her. Perhaps she would figure it out quicker if you removed the cone and just tried to get her around the wing. At home try to find different objects to send her around. Thrash bin, tree, post lamp,… when she sees that she can go around different objects, wings will be no problem anymore. Also start asking for a bit more precision. Decide in which direction she needs to turn in advance. If you want her to turn towards you, use the arm closest to her. If you want her to come in and turn away from you change the handling to what you can see on this video and of course use appropriate verbal cues. 🙂
Target – nice. It was good that you stopped when she wasn’t focused anymore. Next time make less repetitions. If she is fine going into tunnels already, you can start with a tunnel, set up a tunnel about 6-7m away in a straight line from where she exits the tunnel and the bowl further ahead. Sometimes straight (or almost straight), sometimes to the left/right. If tunnels are still not her friends, you can gradually start with a wrap as well. Just like you can see on my target training video. But closer at first, if you can’t send her that much.
January 31, 2019 at 9:36 pm #9294thank you 🙂 i hope you are enjoying your time in Canada 🙂
today we went in for training in our space (we have just a few jumps, a tunnel and a slalom). i focused more on cik cap and jumps.
i was planning on doing some target as well, but i believe that for Indie (and Eric) it is better to just do 2 sessions per training, they loose a lot of energy, especially if it they are learning something new. Maybe it is better to do the ‘difficult’ exercises in the first 2 sessions and then have a 3rd one with more running (like crazy balls through tunnel or some jumps like i did today). i will try it out next time 🙂so cik cap went better with the wing today! it was difficult at first and she went for the cone, but it got better. after i closed the camera, she offered it PERFECTLY around the wing! but no video, you just have to believe me! and i just had this idea, i dont know why i have not thought of it before, but i can take a jump at home, since those are mine jumps 😀 and pracise cikcap on the wing at home and later the exercise you sent me at the garden. 😀
jumps also went great, i did some exercises, but again no video, please believe me. 😀 ony just one short one! but she is doing great, i make her eager for it, counting 1, 2, 3 and she barks and then runs like hell to get the ball!
January 31, 2019 at 9:46 pm #9295just one more question, i forgot before, about the jump on game. i do it firstly without the target correct? and i train the target on the plank individually?
February 4, 2019 at 10:44 pm #9299here are today’s training videos. i thnk that it went well overall 🙂 i am very proud of her for cik cap, it is going pretty well 🙂
February 5, 2019 at 2:27 am #9305Good job! Big improvement with cik/cap! 🙂 For sure, it is a good idea to take wings home. It will speed up her understanding. Although I see that on the last video she was wrapping the wing very well already. Gradually you have to start asking for more and more precision – always wait to get her attention before you start and don’t let her choose witch side to take after a wrap randomly. You can sometimes just ask her for one wrap, run away, show her which hand you want her to follow and when she arrives, reward with the treat from that hand or throw one further ahead. With that same hand. Also try to avoid too many repetitions of the same pattern. So if one way works great, change something next time. Start with a turn away from you and finish with a turn towards you. Or same on both cones. Or just have several and run from one to another randomly. I find it very important that the pup understands to read the cues and listen and not just create a pattern.
You can also just keep increasing the distance, so she needs to find the cone alone. And now and than reward with toy, not just food.
Target – mostly very good but she doesn’t have enough focus for the bowl. If you have someone there to help you out, they can throw the treats in for you. You run with her, but don’t get too excited to not “steal” her attention. When you train alone, perhaps try throwing treats again instead of placing them in a bowl. You can also play a game where you just run from bowl to bowl without a target and always sneak in a treat behind your back when you both already turn towards the other bowl. So the treat is already there when she arrives.
Tunnels look good! Keep working on them until she is happy to go into a U shaped tunnel so you can start combining it with wraps.See-saw – yes, do the jump on game and the run to the end of the plank game separately. Target on for run to the end of the plank, but not for jump on.
And you are right about the structure of the training. More thinking sessions first, fun and short stuff in the end.
February 12, 2019 at 8:59 pm #9314hello Polona!
if i remember correctly, yoy must have returned from Canada 🙂 so i am sending you to make arrangements for individual lessons both for Eric and Indie!
we are slowly making progress with Indie, i will send new videos by the end of the week (i will go in the field again on Thursday) and when you see the HUGE post i have made for my boy before you left, i have some new footage i can show you 🙂
so send me whenever you can how we will proceed with the individual lessons 🙂
February 14, 2019 at 10:18 pm #9326So here are today’s field videos 🙂
First time with the see saw 🙂 she liked it i think 🙂
I had it very low, it was moving just a bit, since this was the first time (the sound of the video is a bit off, that is why it seems like i am clicking at the wrong time)Then some target training (we’ve had some tries that were not filmed and were better than those on video), not so happy about this session
Cik cap getting better and better 🙂 i used mostly the toy because when i make the movement to show her she is looking down for the food or ball, so today i used mostly the tug.. I think i should reduce the food throws, at least for now, it seems to be confusing for her. You might notice it on the video as well, she does it a couple of times
Aaaaand tunnel compined with some wraps 🙂 i just have to remember not to move so soon hehe

February 15, 2019 at 10:50 am #9332See-saw – really good. No hurry, you can do the exact same thing a few more times before you change anything. It is really important that a dog sees it as the best fun ever! 🙂
Target – not so happy about that. 🙂 I would really like her to have better forward focus. Her hits are not good anymore because she is trying to hit but already looking at you for approval at the same time, so she hits totally randomly, with not enough intent. When you go to a training place, are you mostly there alone or do you have someone with you? If so, you can just go back to bowls/plates, have food ready in the bowl/on the plate, and just have the assistant step on/over it if she didn’t hit. I think it is neccessary that she doesn’t get rewarded from the hand for a while, to stop looking at you so much. At home you can just place bowls, each on one end of the room/garden and start by placing food in both, holding Indie so she can’t steal them :), than start running from bowl to bowl. Indy should get there first and take the treat, than you both turn towards the other bowl and secretly you place another treat in the bowl behind your back (with one hand), so there is always one treat waiting for her. You should run with her as fast as you can. This exercise will help her focus forward even when you are running with her.
Turns – I think she has a similar issue there – looking at you too much. I don’t think it is a direct consequence of food throws because with throws she was a bit more in a shaping mode and when nothing happened she was offering things. With the toy she got more excited and she doesn’t “remember” to offer to go around. 🙂 But she has to figure it out. So I wouldn’t tell her what to do or point at the wing with your hand – because that only makes her look at you more. Instead just walk calmly towards the wing and give her the opportunity to offer something. If she doesn’t, walk in the opposite direction slowly and come back to the wing. be patient, let her figure this out. If she offers it, you get really happy immediately, run and reward like crazy. 🙂
I promise I will look at your boy’s video this weekend and I am preparing a new system for individual lessons, because lately I have been doing more and more and I want it a bit more organised. So I will be back with more info next week. 🙂
February 15, 2019 at 11:14 am #9334thank you so much 🙂
i usually go in alone, but i can ask from someone to help me when there is someone there 🙂 (i usually do not trust anyone to help me because either they do not do exactly what i ask them to do or they have comments on how i do it and they confuse me hehehe, but i will do it when i get the chance).
and yes, i have to do the bowl game more.
in general i have been a bit off lately (because of that problem at home, it has drained me a lot) but i am trying to get back in our schedule 🙂yes, please let me know when you get organised 🙂
i will send you another video when we agree on how to proceed with Eric, but for now i can tell you that i have started some simple shaping with him and he really enjoys it (actually cik cap have already improved A LOT after i re-did it with shaping) 😀February 17, 2019 at 9:28 pm #9344today’s videos 🙂
cik cap went a lot better after following your advice 🙂
i started with some bowl game and then added the target (we had played the bowl game a bit at home), i tested some things to see how it would go 😀 but i think that with the bowls she is less focused on me and understands it better
February 21, 2019 at 11:00 am #9351I just noticed that i posted the same video twice instead of the jump on video and it seems that i cannot edit my post now so here it is
More videos later today since we are going to the field 🙂 🙂
February 21, 2019 at 10:48 pm #9359TOoday it went pretty well 🙂
it was funny when i let her go in the field and walked along, she stood in front of the tunnel entrance (she did that on every tunnel in the field), looked at me and waited from me to give her the cue. when i did, she made a little circle and went in the tunnel 🙂 it was so funny seeing her waiting from me to tell her to go in the tunneli am very impressed by her progress in the small target since the last time! and i have lifted it juuuust a bit more!
i left the jump on game last (since we have already done it some times and i needed her to be focused on the target exercise that i did first) and it seems it was not a good idea. she was already tired and did not try that much. now i know better and i will not do the same mistake the next time 🙂
February 24, 2019 at 8:03 am #9362Sorry, I am super slow these days, big life decisions in front of me (I am making an offer for a property) so I am running around from early morning to late at night trying to get everything ready. Now this class is officially over, but I will open registration for the other classes and private lessons in the next two days.
Nice progress in all the exercises. She is happy with the tunnel and much better on wraps. So now you can try to move a bit faster towards the wing. Not too fast at first, and don’t use your hands or voice too much (you can just give the verbal for a turn gently) because you don’t want to steal her attention. But start adding movement so in a few sessions you can start handling her normally and combine the wraps with tunnels.
See-saw – running to the end looks good, now just keep going like this and be VERY enthusiastic when she reaches the end. Now and than you can also run with her and even in front of her to get more speed, but never forget to practise staying behind as well. Jump up – yes the last session was not the best. Always do it when she is fresh and motivated, and you don’t have to do too many repetitions. Now reward only when she jumps on with all 4. Keep the session dynamic, you can run away from the see-saw and back to keep her moving and excited.
Target – better! Now also add running in front of her. You will have to look back to see what she did or use an assistant to tell you, but at this point it is important that she can focus and does the right thing no matter where you are. In front, behind, to the side,…
February 24, 2019 at 8:35 am #9367Thank you Polona 🙂
Another class over 🙂 🙂
Let me know about the cost of working with Eric too on individual lessons for some time and i am thinking of enrolling them both to LPA when it starts again, but surely we need to keep working in the meantime and decide what is best for both of them
And good luck with your new property 🙂 i can undestand how time consuming it may be 🙂 -
