sorry for the 3rd post while you have not responded 🙂
this is today’s practise for the small target 🙂 i think it is going good 🙂 we have not done it in some days, so it took a few tries for her to find it 🙂
January 15, 2019 at 11:45 pm #9172Yes sorry, it took me a while again… If it is ok for you, I would like to make arrangements for your Santa 😉 in February, because I am leaving for a long seminar trip in Kanada and USA soon and I won’t have a lot of time. Please write me after 11th of February and we will make a plan. In the mean time you can send me a little summary of how he is doing so far, just for me to get to know him and see what he needs.
Now little Indie – turns really nice, you can try asking her to go around the wing as well. Make sure you take the bar holders away or at least on the max possible height so she doesn’t hit it with her shoulders. Be patient at first, she might not recognise it. You can also put a cone in front of the wing to help her make the transition. When you reward her after a wrap, always run away as fast as possible, so she learns to really accelerate out of the turn. Gradually you can ask for little combinations such as this… Just without that many multi-wraps at first.
To get her to commit to the jump you can also play a two plate game, similar to what you did with the target, only putting jump in between. Go into a passive mode, almost shaping. If she takes the jump, treat in a bowl/plate, if not, you just walk by. Same attitude like with the target.
See-saw target – ok, but perhaps you can speed up the whole process if you elevate the target a little – place something underneath, just a couple of cm… And try to get her to go there form any direction and wait in position for you to arrive and give her plenty of treats in position. You can start using release cue almost immediately so she knows that treats will keep coming if she stays in position, unless she hears the release.
January 16, 2019 at 9:47 am #9176no worries about the late response-weekends are to get some rest 🙂 <3
i have tried doing the wraps as you suggest with Indie but it is when i did not take a video (and it went so well). 🙂 next time i will be more careful!
maybe you have missed my question, but it is OK 🙂 if you see in the video with the jumps, she seems not that interested in the tug (especially when i leave it down or not moving it or if the balls are present). maybe some exercise from LP would help? which one you suggest? i was thinking just attaching the tug to a leash and move it around without me moving so much would be good, since sometimes when i run she does not go for the toy but my leg (she might be a short bearded shepherd deep down in her heart)
About Eric do you want me to post here, in this thread, or sent you a seperate e-mail? maybe it is more convenient for you here because of the videos (you don’t have to open YouTube seperately). i will sent you the summary for him soon and then remind you again on the 11th of February as you said 🙂
January 16, 2019 at 7:08 pm #9182Oh yes, sorry. Sometimes I start thinking about things I see and forget about the question. But I remember wanting to comment something about playing but obviously forgot that too. Anyway – I noticed she is not tugging strong, but that is common, young dogs sometimes set their mind on the reward they are expecting and are not ready for a different kind of game. But you just have to work on it. I don’t think any special exercise is required just more movement – so longer rope and lots of running, so you make the toy move really fast. It will wake up the hunter in her and she will tug better too.
Yes, you can post Eric’s video here. 🙂 And remind me on 12th – on 11th I am traveling home so I will just drop into the bed and sleep for about 12 hours in one piece probably. 🙂
January 17, 2019 at 9:31 am #9198i can TOTALLY relate with that feeling you mention 🙂 it happens to me all the time 😀
and this is why i am writing now to you about Eric. i have been thinking for some days what would help to give you a good idea about him and due to the danger of me forgetting everything, i am doing it now 🙂
Sorry for the long post, please see it when you have time 🙂———————————————-ERIC—————————————————–
(aka Santa, Riri, Shortie-“Kontos” in Greek)i will send some videos to help you understand his progress.
Here is a video from when we were running in A0. i think this was his fastest course ever. you may notice him slowing down a lot before taking the jumps (it is really obvious in the straight line before the finish line).
here is a video of our last successfull examination in A1. It is really BAD. i do not like it at all. and i have to admit that this is not the worst course we had. in general i do not know how we managed to get in A2, but it is totally rational not to have any successfull examination in A2. in the contrary – you will see below why.
and this is on of our few exams in A2. i can not even bare to watch it i am just posting it for you.
We had 3 competitions in A2 and then i decided to stop (in the last competition we had he even went UNDER a bar, something he had never done before) and work with him privately (i used to be in a team), in an online seminar. I was very dissapointed at the time and was almost about to give up. He was getting worse and worse and while i could understand why, i was really confused. It was about the time i got Indie and i was not sure what to do. I was even thinking of just working advanced obedience with both of them (Eric has passed BH). And then it happened to be in vacation at the same place with Maria and Blink, it was really an eye-opener. Maria helped me a lot to decide what to do. 🙂
We have finished the seminar last month, and here is a video of an unofficial course we had. at the end he should have done out but i was late because of the mistake in the tunnel, but overall his performance is much much better. He is faster, happier and much more focused.
(i have watched this video many many times)
note that the see saw is not trained to be like this, it was an accident, he just thought it was the DW.what i think is missing from Eric’s training, are the contacts and the see-saw (he was never trained with anything but i think that RC would work good for him – i have seen in some other of your posts that for not that motivated dogs it might be better than stopping on the contact). Also he does not know “in” and i believe that his speed in the tunnels could get a lot better – he slows down some times.
you might have understood from the videos that he was originally trained with luring. I have introduced the clicker lately and he seems to get it, even though he will bark or sit and not offer anything. But he is slowly getting it more and more. He is always hungry (you can work with him while holding a carrot), he loves balls a lot and tugging is good but not always (i was thinking of working with him with a food pouch-tug). Also, his turns are not tight at all and he actually not know cik-cap 🙂January 17, 2019 at 9:44 am #9199and two adittional comments:
it was my mistake to be at the wrong side of the A-frame (i have planned on being on the right) 😛
also, i would love to work more complicated slalom entrances but i think this could wait a bit 😀January 17, 2019 at 9:54 am #9201Ok I will take a look at it when I have more time and start something when I get back from Canada.
January 17, 2019 at 9:53 pm #9203yes of course 🙂 no hurry! 🙂
here is today’s session with the see-saw target with Indie 🙂 it helped a lot to lift it a bit as you said. imagine i got here out from her crate and i had already set up the target in the kitchen and when i walked in, she was already standing on it!
January 19, 2019 at 12:31 pm #9220Ok good, now you can add a little plate or a bowl on the ground in front of the “object”, so she can stand in position and eat from that plate. Stand next to her when she is in position (both sides equally) and drop treats from above. Gradually you can get her used to looking down at the plate to receive more treats. In the first phase you just drop the treats so frequently that she doesn’t have time to look up at you. Later on you can drop one and wait. She will probably look at you at that moment, but you ignore that and wait for her to look down again. And that is when you throw the next treat. This little game helps teach forward focus and not looking back at the handler at all times. I hope you get the idea from this description. If not, let me know and I will try to make a little video.
January 20, 2019 at 5:11 pm #9233this weekend we had an agility seminar where my pack and I participated.
We did some foundation exercises with Indie, you can see most of the session in the below video (the rest of the session is not on video because of low phone memory 🙁 )
i am just sending you to see the progress of Indie 🙂 i am really happy to see that she is enjoying it so much!
also i think that it is time to teach her to stay so that i am able to use it when i practise by myself 😀 i have avoided it so far but i think i should do itJanuary 20, 2019 at 10:21 pm #9235Hehe, yes, she is definitely enjoying agility. Next step is surely to run little “sequences” around cones, like on that video I posted a while ago. And yes, you can start teaching her to stay. At first always coming back to reward her in position and only after several treats in position release cue + throw. And later on switching to throwing directly. No sit no run. 🙂 But no hurry, it is important that the dog understands and likes the position first.
January 22, 2019 at 10:06 am #9250yes, i know i have to do the sequence like you have sent to me but i did not have much time to visit the field lately (we are having some issues at home and i do not have a lot of free time 🙁 ) but i have planned of going in on Thursday and i hope i will make it! 🙂 i have already tried once last week but no video 🙁
also, i was thinking that maybe using a mat like a platform to train her for stay would be easier for her, since she already loves to be on that puzzle things 😀 also since she is such a little hyperactive bunny she does not like to sit, so i think that standing would be great for her starting line 🙂 we will see
and here is the see saw target with the plate in front of it. i think it went well sice this was our first session with it 🙂
January 22, 2019 at 11:15 am #9253After some initial confusion, she is now getting better and better with this target&plate thing. Some repetitions towards the end were really nice. Now work on staying more and more behind to begin with, and let her start, than follow her to deliver treats. Also practise that she stays in position even if you move forward. But always come back to reward her. This is preparation for all kinds of handling situations – sometimes you will be in front, sometimes behind,…
When on the field, you can place the target on the plank (fixed and only slightly higher on one end) and do the same. Starting on the plank, just one step away from the target at first, and than gradually more and more behind.About the stay – for now make all positions really rewarding. Always keep coming back to her with more and more treats. In agility you can always start also with a throw in the opposite direction and while she is running to get it, move forward to where you need to be. When she eats her treat you just call her and continue with whatever you had in mind.
January 24, 2019 at 8:59 pm #9263we managed to go to the field 🙂
she did well with the plank, she undestood quite quicky what she fah to do. she is so funny, trying to get the food <3
it is like she is in fast forward at some point hehe
then we had cikcap, i tried doing it with multiple cones and then i added a wing. i think she did well with the cones but the wing confused her. when i changed it’s position i think it was better for her.
and finally some target practice 🙂 i was out of sausage and she does not like the food i had with me, but she tried. i stopped when i saw she was tired/did not want to try any more.
next visit at the field is scheduled for Saturday!
January 25, 2019 at 2:50 am #9267I am sorry I am in Canada, teaching seminars and surprisingly enough, I have no wifi until Monday. I just “stole” someones data to write this notification. I am sorry for a delay…
