Here is the same exercise in our garden 🙂 i am taking advantage of the good weather these days because it is gonna get really cold (also i am going to take a tooth out next week) so i do not know when i will go in the agility field again, so i am training in our garden as much as i can. i love how some times Indie jumps all happy on the target 🙂 even though she is still sloppy sometimes
when the weather gets bad i am planning in training cik/cap discrimination (already working on this during the last days) and introduce the smaller target we are going to need for the see saw.i have two general questions of you don’t mind:
1. (maybe a stupid question) i understand that the target exercises we are doing lately are the foundation for DW RC, correct? i understand how we are going to train the see saw (as discussed lately), but i am not sure about the A frame 🙂 are we going to use the target or is there something else? (someone would think i should know since i have a dog in A2 but in reality he has not done any serious contact training-we will discuss this further when we start working together)2. about Eric, as i have mentioned before, he is now on a break (for a couple more weeks). could you please let me know how much it will cost to enrol him in LPA too (you may sent me a private message if you don’t want to discuss this here)? should i enrol him now or wait for the next class to start? i plan on enrolling them both in the next class of LPA since Indie has so much to learn and Eric so much more to re-train 🙂
January 2, 2019 at 2:07 pm #9037also one more question after re-qatching the video:
is it ok that i am ruuning next to her? should i try to run a bit more far from her? also, maybe i should let her lead sometimes?January 3, 2019 at 9:29 am #9044So target training going well! 🙂 You can slowly bring the bowls more in line with the mat for one part of the session (to teach her to run straight through the target – like she will eventually have to on the DW). But don’t hurry, you can keep a small C for a long time, if they are completely in line, she can start focusing on the rewards more than she does on the target. For the second half of the session you can keep the bowl on one end more or less in line with the mat, but place the other one even more to the left/right so she also learns to go to the target and turn sharply. Now and than you can also just have her go to the target and come back. It is ok to move/run along as long as she stays focused and makes good hits. When she is not, get more passive again and help her focus on the target again. And yes when you are moving, it is good to try everything. To be far in front, to be behind, to be sideways, to be close,…
– I don’t have any special method for A-frame usually. After they learn the dog-walk, A-frame usually comes easy. We might use the same target for a couple of sessions, but A-frame usually comes easy if they understand DW well.
– The second dog of the same handler is usually the auditing price. But the next LPA will only start in May and I think you want some continuation with Indie, so if you want we can make some individual arrangement for both dogs.
January 3, 2019 at 9:31 am #9045Ohh and I keep forgetting to ask before I click “send” – how are Maria and Blink doing? 🙂 I haven’t heard from them in a long time.
January 3, 2019 at 10:59 am #9051“..so if you want we can make some individual arrangement for both dogs.”
yes, i agree, Indie will need to keep training so i would love to make some arrangement for both of them 🙂Maria and Blink are fine, Maria is very happy you asked how they are and she will send you a message herself 🙂
January 3, 2019 at 9:54 pm #9055Ok, deal. 🙂 And yes, Maria wrote me, great progress with Blink, makes me happy! 🙂
January 4, 2019 at 6:49 pm #9075yes, Maria and Blink are having great progress and they are a great team! Maria is trying so hard!
here is today’s session of cik/cap. I am trying to teach her to discriminate those two 🙂 i think it went well somewhere in the middle of the video and i might should have stopped because she got confused lated on (but when i stopped talking and let her think about it she did it fine). what do you think? are we on a good track? i have not tried yet what you have sent me with the toy (bad weather and all), but i have not forgotten about it
January 6, 2019 at 1:58 pm #9080aaaand today’s target training. she was not that focused but i think she did well.
January 6, 2019 at 11:47 pm #9085In general good job, but when working indoors, try to use some carpet or something to prevent her from slipping. She slipped quite a lot in the cik/cap session and that is quite demotivating. Other than that, she seemed quite talented and she kept trying even when she wasn’t rewarded immediately…. 100% verbal discrimination is quite difficult and it requires lots and lots of practise. But it can be a good challenge for winter days. Although still at this age for me it is more important to try teach as many different tricks as possible and not neccessary perfecting them.
What you really need now (agility wise) is to teach her to go wrap even from some distance and with you moving along and even with the toy in your hand. So when you are standing on the field she is able to search for wings/jumps and not just jump into you. Handling is almost never just verbal, there is also a visual component, so for me working on verbal discrimination alone is already masters degree. 🙂
Target – I think at first she just didn’t realise you are having a shaping session. Different environment made her a bit distracted. But once she figured it out, she was doing well. Next time you can try with just some static “touch the target and come back” repetitions to get her in the shaping mode and than gradually add movement from bowl to bowl. Although I think she will remember what to do next time. 😉January 9, 2019 at 8:29 pm #9115i have a question about the see saw training that we have discussed a few posts ago and the see saw target.
i am now training the target indoors (the little one that she has to stop with the front paws) and i was thinking whether i can start the plank exercise you have mentioned in parallel, without the target and then compine those too.
for now, we have managed her to put one paw on the target (she is figuring it out quite fast though-we only had two sessions).
i was just thinking about it and i wanted to ask you if it makes sense or i just have to stick to the target and then go on with the plank 🙂January 10, 2019 at 7:39 pm #9125Starting with the plank training parallel will do no harm, but if you are planing to do the target, I see no reason to hurry, take some more days to teach the target perfectly and than combine with the plank. 🙂
January 10, 2019 at 8:05 pm #9128oops.. when we were talking about it i though that to teach the plank i have to teach the target first! my bad!
i will keep on with the target (if you believe it is the best for Indie) and send you a video to guide us 😀-

January 11, 2019 at 12:06 pm #9138I mean target makes things easier – because it defines what you want a bit better. So nothing wrong with your way. 🙂 Sometimes with young pups I would just do running up the plank and hide a treat behind the edge as a pre-exercise – so they like running to the edge of something. But it doesn’t make a huge difference in the end. Both approaches are ok.
January 14, 2019 at 1:20 pm #9153No new videos from Indie, we had a busy weekend and just did some practise on already known stuff.
but i was thinking that we should discuss more about Eric 🙂
Do you want to send me a private message (maybe in Facebook or by e-mail) to discuss the cost for his private lessons? 🙂
And i have in mind some videos that i will share with you about him and his progress but i wanted to arrange the details with you first, just to be fair 🙂January 14, 2019 at 8:46 pm #9156so today, field training!
i did the exercise you have said with the wings/cone and food. he did well BUT somebody (me) did not press the right button so no video :'( i did it at the cone first with food (like shaping we have at home) and then swithced to toy and waited for her to offer it and then run. And when we did it a couple of times i switched to the wing and started a bit earlier than her. she did good. when i noticed i did not press the button i tried to do a couple more repetitions for you, she did it good at the cone but when i moved to the wing she was confused and jumped on me so i just stopped
and then some jumps!
overall great but i think i should exercise on is the tug, she did not seem very interested in it (at least with the balls in sight and when it was not moving).
maybe some exercise from LP would help, but which one would you suggest?-
