Okay, thanks, we’ll try that!
Meanwhile, here’s an update on our sits…..with some food toss games thrown in 🙂
April 20, 2022 at 6:33 am #18769Poor little man, working so hard! <3 Generally really nice, just always make sure that he is perfectly still (no leg movement) before you bring the hand with the treat back. I would also make start using a clear verbal equivalent of a click. “Yes!” “Ok” or something like that, to mark the exact moment you want to reward. It will help with understanding and also “compression” - as it will become very clear what he is waiting for.
April 21, 2022 at 11:27 am #18792Thank you! That makes perfect sense.
We started working on pivoting. We’re getting lots of back-and-forth, but don’t seem to be making much progress on completing the circle.
April 26, 2022 at 11:39 am #18839Sorry, I got really sick over the weekend. :/
To help him get past the point where he normally gets stuck, you can put a hand with treats right in front of his nose to keep him in place while you gently move around him so you stand almost directly behind him. Once you are in position remove the hand that was keeping him in place and he will rotate again. Once he gets fluent with it, you can try not moving around anymore but instead keeping the hand above him (at the centre of the target) at all times, putting it lower to deliver the treat and than lifting it a bit higher again, so he is no longer feels like he has to face you all the time, but can focus on the target above him.May 2, 2022 at 11:21 am #18878Hope you’re feeling better!
Here’s an update on sits and pivoting. I’m trying to mark stillness on the sits. Moving the treat sure helped with pivoting – thank you!!
May 3, 2022 at 2:44 pm #18888Nice improvements on both tricks! With pivoting you no longer have to help him so much, just hold the hand above him, totally still (no flicking in any direction) and let him do the rotation independently. Than slowly raise the hand higher and higher until he can pivot independently. 🙂
Sit&wait – also some super nice and calm repetitions. I would still do less in a row though… it is hard for him. So you can mix it up with some other more dynamic tricks. -
