Yes it is completely normal for a dog to get confused and offer stuff from a previous/similar trick. But I am actually happy about it, because it means that the dog is making a generalisation and it is always good to have more behaviours to choose from. To help them finish one trick without too much confusion, I try to use totally different objects. If she tries to put the hind leg on just now and than, don’t worry, just make sure you don’t reward that. If I see that the dog is really insisting on putting all 4 on the object, I will take something smaller, so there is only room for 2 feet. 🙂
November 23, 2018 at 5:01 pm #8663here is the nose touch session i have promised 🙂 she is not very intense yet about it but maybe it is something that will happen later?
November 23, 2018 at 6:40 pm #8666Good! Don’t worry about intensity. Some dogs are more, some less intense. I don’t really train for extra strong pushes, because perhaps some dogs don’t feel comfortable smashing their nose against your hand. I do want an obvious touch though, so I will sometimes train this with my eyes close so the dog can’t fool me with an “almost” touch. 😀 If you want more intensity, do it when she is really playful or waiting to go out or something. Or just ask for one touch and than throw food for a while. So everything is more dynamic. Expecting a party after nose touch is very useful for recall. 🙂 So you can get some special tasty treats for when you go outside the house, call her now and than, ask her to do nose touch and go straight to some dynamic reward. Food throws or even playing with toys.
November 24, 2018 at 9:47 am #8671here is today’s cik/cap 🙂
November 25, 2018 at 8:16 am #8674Nice! She is really nice and tight most of the time. Outside try to add some distance and speed. Switch between rewarding around the cone, to keep her as tight as possible and rewarding away from the cone (throws or chasing) to add more dynamic and speed.
November 26, 2018 at 3:00 pm #8686today i had the 1st session with the target 🙂 🙂
i will go in the field today for training and i was thinking of having some cik/cap and target training with her(small sessions of both with a big break in between), but i am not sure if it will be too much since up to now we have only been playing on the field. maybe i should have only one exercise and then only some games?
November 26, 2018 at 3:22 pm #8687and one question that i was thinking.. when working in the field is it ok if i reward some of the repetitions with food throws but finish the session by rewarding with some tugging or crazy balls? or do you think it would be to early?
November 26, 2018 at 3:53 pm #8689Target going well. Try to add your movement. Just walking passively next to her. And gradually what Lina is doing right now.
I think she sure is ready to do some stuff on the field. If you plan to do some shaping – like target for example – do that first, so she is still fresh, because shaping requires the most concentration. If you see she is distracted (for some pups shaping outside the house is very difficult) just quit, no problem. And switch to more fun exercises she already knows well. Like cik&cap. And yes, those exercises you can reward with food first and than switch to playing.November 26, 2018 at 9:21 pm #8691this is our first try out in the field 🙂 we surely need practise! i have a small garden also, so i will try to do it there also!
November 27, 2018 at 11:13 pm #8702Hehe, she was SOOO enthusiastic, but SOOO not in a shaping mode. 🙂 I didn’t like most repetitions because they were so random, she had no idea what she just did. The more you try to show her things, the more she looked at you and less at the target. I would sit down and place the target right in front of you, keep my hands close and try to get her to remember what shaping looks like. You can keep her on the leash to keep her from going away and entertain herself if she is not successful at first. 🙂 But I would also practise at home and in your garden and gradually attach a cue to it, so you can help her by saying this cue on the field, if she is lost like that.
Next time on the field, try with the wrap. But try to practise it around some tree or cone outside on your garden first.November 29, 2018 at 10:50 pm #8738today’s session in the field 🙂
in the beginning i used her food, as i am doing at home. In the previous session in the field (the one i posted about) when she was excited and not focused on shaping i was holding delicious sausage 😉 so today i tried doing a session outside with her food. at first she was not interested, i think she was waiting to play not shape 😛 but as we went she got in the mood. after the first half of the video you will see me getting some of the sausage she loves. she was much more focused in offering things than last time even though she was excited and she offered a lot more than with her food – which i find normal but i do not like it 😛 ( i am used with my older dog that you can work with him even with dried bread 😛 i know that they are different in this and i am doing patience with Indie to increase her food drive, which is muuuuch better than when we started 🙂 )November 30, 2018 at 4:43 pm #8746Also, here is a video of one of our sessions for 4 in a box. i am sending you this because i think that she is stuck. for some sessions now, she is just putting two paws in and takes them out very fast. i think that maybe it is the box that scares her, it is moving and she is not sure if it is OK. i am thinking of cutting the bottom of it and just leave the “walls” and when she gets it get another box and continue. (i used a smaller one before and she only got 2 feet in, so i got the bigger one to teach her to put all 4 in and this is the progress so far. she is getting all 4 paws on a pillow, puzzle pieces – if you remember from LP, so seems weird that she is not getting them in the carton box)
November 30, 2018 at 9:51 pm #8748Field session first. 🙂 It is very nice that she got so excited when you used better food last time. That is how you will be able to reward her for extra difficult things and working around plenty of distractions. Since you were not using it lately and you didn’t used to shape outside, she just didn’t think of offering behaviours. But this time when you helped her start with normal food she did. 🙂 Normally I wouldn’t do such a long shaping session outside, just enough to have her remember what we are doing and than you can make it more fun by throwing treats as soon as she does first 180-270 degrees of the wrap. Like what you can see on one of the last videos Kristina posted. 🙂 And if she is very motivated, change your starting position so she has to go further and further on her own to offer the wrap.
Going into the box – yes, I think the major issue is the sound the bottom of the box makes when she steps on it. You can try just putting it on a folded blanket, I think it will muffle the sound and make it more friendly. If not you can cut the bottom or use a bigger cardboard box. 🙂

December 4, 2018 at 3:42 pm #8792Haha, she is too funny! Nice, she is definitely making progress! 🙂 Do you think she would understand you already if you sent her to the cone with a verbal cue (and help of body language?) If so, you can do that sometimes. Or start with it perhaps and after let her offer it on her own. Do you have someone to help you on the field? You can have them restrain her and practise sprints over straight tunnel or two jumps in a straight line with bars on the ground. Gradually you can combine – starting with a wrap and than sprint over the straight tunnel… So she gets some running as well, not just thinking hard. 🙂
