Hi, My name is Ween Sze and my dog is Duchess, 7 yr old Mini Schnauzer. We are still doing the Let’s Play and would like to learn more to convert that for agility.
Thank
Ween SzeOctober 31, 2018 at 11:56 pm #8242Welcome! 🙂
November 8, 2018 at 4:18 pm #8410Hi Polona,
Pls see our exercise and comment. I am doing other 2 videos and will post it soon. I am using rabbit tail tied on string for reward and food as jackpot reward.
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 8, 2018 at 11:08 pm #8417So running as such was quite good! She is just not 100% into that bunny tail. I think it is definitely a game you should develop, but perhaps it is not yet strong enough to use in training. How are you doing with the play trick? It will be easier when she understands that if she catches the toy and wins the fight, she gets food as bonus. So you will be able to switch between the bunny tail and food easily. When you are playing with the tail and she looses interest, make it move fast. Don’t just wiggle it in front of his face. You have better chance of getting her interested if it also runs as a bunny. 😉
You can try this same game with food throws too. It is the “safest” way, because we know she loves food. Just get big pieces and throw them far, so they really encourage running, even in front of you, not just chasing you.November 13, 2018 at 7:16 am #8485Hi Polona,
I tried food throws, but it seems like she chews or eats slow also and took some time at the end of the jump to eat :). I also made a food pocket because the food pocket that I bought and has, she seems not keen on it, so I made my own and it seems that she is more keen. In the video, you can see she playing tug with the pink food pocket. She also seems to play tug harder with the rabbit paw (this time). Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 13, 2018 at 9:34 pm #8503Great improvement with tugging! Both with the rabbit tail and food pocket. Once she gets a good grip and starts pulling lite at 2.28, start using your body more, to make the whole “fight” more interesting. In the pressure phase you can touch her sides, but when you are gradually letting go, turn away from her. Keep her on the side of your body or even behind your back. But while you are turning, make sure you keep good tension in the toy all the time. Sometimes you are still very careful and not pulling hard enough. That is when she usually starts chewing or looses interest. Don’t worry if you pull too hard. You just switch to a quick chase immediately and she will give you another opportunity with the next bite. 🙂
Same goes for playing with food bag. Also when she wins try to make it all about the bag. Leave it on the ground, approach her from the side and just help her open the bag. Than refill the bag and let her watch. Use the free hand to keep her from stealing it, but in a very gentile way so she always thinks she still has a chance.
I would also try food ball (you can improvise with a tennis ball) so you have something you can throw better for trainings.Overall I really like her attitude, barking on the start and she was running very well. If you manage to get her interested in food ball you can use that, if not, try to play food throws once per day so she gets used to it and starts to chew faster.
You can try one of the other setups from my video next time. 🙂
November 14, 2018 at 9:08 am #8510Hi Polona,
I will definitely work on learning to play with her. And will try with food ball (tennis ball) to see if I can improve her play with balls. In this video, I tried a different setups and uses the whip thing and tied her food pocket to it. I will practice the tugging with her according to your instructions.
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 14, 2018 at 5:34 pm #8519Great. This will be very useful for next lesson with turns! 🙂 In the next phase you can keep the whip steady, send her normally to a tunnel or over a jump and start the chase after, as a reward. Doing obstacles while she is chasing is fun now and than but she has to learn to run fast to get the reward not only when she is chasing it. But I really like how her playing is improving! Great job so far. For now you can reward her a bit more often though – every time she catches let her have a snack from the food pocket.
November 19, 2018 at 4:45 pm #8609Hi Polona,
Please find Duchess video on tunnel turns.
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 19, 2018 at 5:04 pm #8610Hi Polona,
And this is the THREADLES video.
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 20, 2018 at 12:45 am #8615Again I must compliment you2 on the playing. It has improved so much! She is very excited to play and chase and understands what she needs to do to get the treat. 🙂 Tunnel game was really nice. You can upgrade it to the next level where the toy is no longer waiting at the exit, you just give the turn cue and call her and only start the chase when she comes out – if she comes out tight.
The threadle went well too… however you made it even more difficult than a regular treadle with how you angled the jump. 🙂 Blue to purple would have been easier. Even more so if you placed the purple one a bit deeper (further away from the DW), so at first it is almost a straight line from where the dog finishes the wrap. I would throw something as a reward instead of feeding from the hand, to make sure she gets proper acceleration. You can simply throw food or try with a ball if she will be interested.
And I am not sure, perhaps you just didn’t put everything on the video, but when you are doing an uni-lateral exercise, make sure to do both directions on the same training. So there is equal amount of stress on both parts of the body.
November 22, 2018 at 8:15 am #8645Hi Polona,
Please see for Duchess Tunnel Turns play. I think I may have made a mistake, she should be chasing me right? Sorry for being blur!
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 22, 2018 at 8:24 am #8646Hi Polona,
Please also see the threadles turn exercises. I did a food throw instead. Looking forward to your feedbacks
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 22, 2018 at 8:34 am #8647Hi Polona,
What I also do was do a play with her before doing the homework, which I intend to do it as a routine also during trials…it seems to perk her up! I also did some shaping today as I notice she does not seems to prefer turning left 🙂
And yes, I did both side for unilateral exercises…just did not post the videos earlier 🙂
Thanks
Ween SzeNovember 22, 2018 at 11:22 pm #8654Good job! 🙂 One really important playing rule you should never forget – when she catches the toy, always let her win and leave the toy to her when you give her food. If you pull the toy away and she starts to ignore it and comes asking for food, you are teaching her that it is ok to ignore the toy sometimes. I want her to get excited every time she sees it and grab the opportunity to bite the hell out of it. 🙂
Tunnel turns – yes, in general you can create more excitement if you run away so she has to accelerate even more when she comes out. Nothing really wrong with static repetitions as well, but I would mix it. Sometimes static, sometimes running, so she never knows what she gets. 🙂
Threadles generally good! She is pretty good at turning, so to keep things easy you don’t always have to ask for multi-wrap with her. And sometimes you can just throw over the second jump, so she doesn’t have to turn and come back for a reward. So turn, come and GOOOOOO. I personally like to use the opposite hand to call the dog in between the two jumps, but there are different handling options, as long as it is clear for the dog it is fine. Do you say anything in particular to call her in or just call her name?
Turns – you can try that exercise where you actually wait for her to offer you the jump on her own and get the party started when she does. 🙂
I already commented on the playing part above 🙂 1.10 was perfect, 0.49 was not.
Do you think you will have space to play with the whip in the pre-ring on competitions? What is your plan for a routine? -
