Good point about the wires – thanks for the reminder. 🙂 I’ll fade them upward. Here is step 1.
I think our tunnel work is beginning to pay off 🙂
We added a second tunnel….
Ice coped well with a little extra distraction in the weaves :). I also closed the channel a little more.

Yes, I think we’ll go back to a little one-jump work on ins and outs. We can do that at home.
In today’s DW session I introduced one and then 2 jumps. Omi had several misses but I thought he coped pretty well with the change in setup.
Before taking down the speed circle to make room for the DW we tried some ins and outs on the straight lines. Watching the video I realise I should have rewarded them both more frequently after difficult ins and outs.
Omi has had a bit of a break from DW training. Today we started with 2 perfect hits with a helper at the end of the DW (not on video). We had fewer misses this time. Next session we’ll add a jump.
Your impulsivity theory appears to be spot on 😀 Thank you! I think Ice’s weaves are progressing well now. We broke the weave session into 2 parts. I closed the channel a little in between. I don’t think Ice even noticed.
We did a very short session of food bowl tunnels on the right.
This is today’s weave session – no popped poles 😀
We also played around with tunnels using a food bowl this time, with mixed results.
June 27, 2021 at 4:41 am in reply to: Maureen, Lyric & Omi, Papillons, 4 and 5 years, Bermuda #16617Thank you! A lot of AKC courses have these awkward lines with lots of lead changes, even in major competitions. I really don’t like them much. Next time we’ll set up something with more interesting handling options.
This setup was mostly for Ice and Boss but I thought Lyric and Omi would have fun with it. I think they’re both listening better.
Congratulations on your new puppy!
We tried the weaves in 2 short sessions with a cone – Ice did much better 🙂 Thank you! He still needs to get used to looking for the cone, but at least he’s not randomly popping poles.
Between the 2 sessions of weaves we played around with tunnels. When we got home I sent Ice through a short curved tunnel to his dinner bowl. He had no trouble with the tunnel 🙂

No, I don’t really think anything specific happened in a curved tunnel to put him off. I did wonder for a while……but I’m starting to think it’s more of a pattern, as it’s happened with training of at least 3 different skills. Ice progresses well for a while, then out of the blue seems to lose his confidence. His stays were slowly improving, then suddenly he couldn’t sit for more than a nanosecond. He was doing well with weaves in Foundations using a thrown ball. Around the time I began throwing the ball later and off to the side he started popping out at random poles. We took a 2-week break from weaves and retried for the first time today – same problem. 🙁
This is today’s stay practice. We had a minor breakthrough. Until now Ice would repeatedly break his stay after every reward or series of rewards. Today he managed to stay on his platform.
Here you can see the deterioration in his weaves, despite reintroducing props. I don’t have video from today, but taking a break from weaves didn’t help. Ice is willing enough, but he really seems to have lost confidence. I’m not sure how to help him. I did try putting a MM at the end of the weaves. It helped initially, then he started popping out again

We’re working steadily on stays – I’ll post this weekend.
Ice has been working on Foundation skills. He tends to be very handler-focused, so I’ve been trying to encourage speed and forward drive. Recently we’ve run into a problem with curved tunnels – he doesn’t like them! I’ve tried working with a very short tunnel at home, away from the agility field. It’s a bit better, but he still tends to check in with me instead of driving to the tunnel. Today we played with this sequence on the agility field. Even when I stretched the long blue tunnel out so it was almost straight, we still got refusals. At the end I brought out Ice’s very favourite toy, his whip tug. The tug seems to be enough to override his aversion to the tunnel. On the other hand, I’ve been trying to use mostly thrown balls to get him to drive away from me.
What are your thoughts? How do you think we should proceed?
June 16, 2021 at 4:29 am in reply to: Maureen, Lyric & Omi, Papillons, 4 and 5 years, Bermuda #16548Just for fun, since we couldn’t go to Westminster this year I set up the WM Jumpers course for Lyric and Omi. Because we’ve run so few courses lately I find my timing is off. I can’t judge where I can get to….and where I need to be. I guess I’d better set more courses 🙂

Today’s session had more misses than I would have liked……but as soon as Omi decides to make an effort to hit, he nails it. I was pleased that he hit on the first attempt. Usually he misses the first one.
I kept today’s session relatively short as it was still pretty warm, even in the evening.
I tried to reward more often…..and we added some wraps on the cone with a pull to the opposite tunnel entrance (Did I understand correctly?). They were both listening well. The miscues and mistakes were mostly mine 🙂
As you suggested, I added more challenges on the DW. They weren’t all perfect hits, but I think Omi is dealing better with changes. Previously if anything changed he would start leaping…..now not so much 🙂
This was today’s session. I think it will help if we work separately on “leave it” so he stops trying to steal the treats.
Traveling……lucky you! 😀
This is today’s session with the tunnels further apart and cones added. I added a few flip aways. Lyric and Omi were never taught threadles/flip aways very methodically, so I thought I would try to fill that gap. It’s a work in progress. 🙂 Reviewing the videos, I see several cues that are a bit late.
I angled the cones a little more on the DW exits. At one point you see Omi decide to head directly to the helper off the side of the contact.
