Thanks, Polona!
With Hogan I’m usually able to run a course clean (or close to it) on the first attempt. He’s slower than the wild squirrels, but I think it’s more a question of timing. I know where Hogan is going to be on the course and can plan accordingly. With Lyric and Omi there are far more uncertainties – how much do I have to support a particular obstacle, can I get there for the BC……? I often avoid doing BCs with them because I’m afraid of stepping on them or cutting them off.
With that in mind, we tried the BC/K-turn drill. 🙂 I really haven’t got the K-turn at all 😛 , but I think the BCs are getting better.
November 6, 2018 at 4:34 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #8343Yes, I’ll get another measurement at our next trial in February.
Since I had to move all the equipment to mow the grass at the training field, I took the opportunity to set up a full course. We’ve been playing on that course for the last 2 training sessions before going back to working on drills and shorter sequences. With Omi it was harder to put everything together, but he had some good moments 🙂
November 2, 2018 at 3:38 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #8280Thank you for the great feedback – I love this class! 😀 I do feel we’re making progress. Lots of table and teeter work to do, though!
Lyric has her height card in AKC but not in Bermuda (Bermuda Kennel Club). It’s a different organization and issues its own height cards. Too bad. In the US UKI recognizes height cards issued by other organizations…..but Bermuda doesn’t. Funny thing is the judge who measured Lyric here is an AKC judge (Bermuda doesn’t have its own judges).
I did sort of give up on turns, at least temporarily. Until I could trust Omi to take the obstacle in front of him (at least most of the time), turns weren’t a huge priority. 🙂 If we were to only run AKC style courses, we could probably forget about tight turns. Daneen Fox and her Pap Masher have won just about everything there is to win…….without ever making a tight turn! 🙂 European-style courses are a lot more fun, though. Even if we don’t see them in competition for the moment, I hope that at some point we’ll be able to run more challenging courses. Carina tells me that the Danish Cup is a really fun event – maybe one day we’ll get there. I’ll check out Pascal, Efi and Mary’s threads and we’ll start working on deceleration cues. A ball behind the wing would be great for Omi! We also need to work serps, threads and backsides at speed.
November 1, 2018 at 3:18 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #8248Since we had 2 days of agility trials on the weekend, we didn’t do much training…….just a bit of gogogo. I tried some turns from further back. With Lyric this was the first time I introduced turns since she was just getting used to the concept of driving ahead. Overall their turns/wraps are horrible and getting worse. They’re both fine with multiwraps. Neither of them was very cooperative when I tried drills wrapping cones, so I’m not sure how best to approach this.
This weekend’s trial was a mixed bag. It started with a major disappointment. Although Lyric has a permanent height card at 11″ and jumps 8″ in AKC, this weekend’s judge measured her at 11 1/4″, putting her into the 12″ jump height. Since we haven’t been training at that height I pulled her from the trial. Omi didn’t run well at all the first day – lots of refusals, mostly caused by me. Day 2 was better…….despite falling off the DW. Apparently he thought that was super-entertaining, since he promptly had an epic teeter fly off in the next run 😛 I did save the course maps, but can’t seem to add them to the videos properly. For some reason when I import the maps they re-size and you can only see part of the course.
October 25, 2018 at 2:22 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #8140Tonight’s session was a short one, as we got rained out. I did successfully add in a couple of wraps with Omi. It took Lyric a couple of tries to figure out the game, but once she did she was flying! 🙂
October 24, 2018 at 2:30 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #8120That will be a challenge…….but we’re up for it 🙂 You’re so right, though. In practice it’s so easy to say we’ll just keep trying till we get it…..not a very good way to train for clean runs! 😛
Tonight’s session with Omi was almost exclusively gogogo. Lyric didn’t get to try it, because she did mat work…..but Hogan thought it was fun 🙂 Here’s Omi’s new setup.

Yes, now that you point it out I can see that I was consistently late on that last turn 😛
Today we ran the other advanced sequence from Lesson 3. As usual, it was more challenging with Omi than Lyric 🙂 I think Omi’s obstacle focus is slowly getting better, but we’re not there yet.
October 20, 2018 at 3:23 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #8054Unfortunately I actually don’t keep any course maps – mostly because the AKC courses are about 100 x 100 feet and don’t fit on my field. The field is about 130 x 65′, so I usually go online to find European courses set on a rectangular grid. I’ll save all the course maps from next weekend.
Omi and Lyric tried one of the advanced sequences from Lesson 3. There were some miscues with Lyric, but she was good enough to ignore them 🙂

Given the option, I will almost always choose to run more dogs. Since we have to travel so far for trials, the more runs we get the better 🙂 Even if we have fewer clean runs, every dog teaches me something different…….and we have fun every time we enter the ring 🙂
Yes, I’d really like to help both dogs be smoother and faster! At least I’m doing a better job staying out of their way 😛 Lyric is actually consistently faster than Omi, even though she’s not running full speed.
I wish I still had the course maps, but I didn’t keep them. For small local trials they don’t post them online, only for major competitions. We do have agility trials here in Bermuda 10 days from now. I’ll be sure to save the course maps from those runs.
Tonight we did the advanced sequences from Lesson 3, but the video failed 🙁 We’ll try again – hopefully tomorrow.
October 18, 2018 at 2:58 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #7999We do get course maps in advance. When I walk the course I spend most of my time weighing handling options for different dogs. I just need to get into the habit of incorporating cues into the walkthrough. 🙂
Today we tried the other basic sequences from Lesson 3.
Hi Maria, Thank you so much for your note! 🙂 The Paps are a blast to run. They never fail to make me laugh! 😀 Tammi is looking great – Kelpies are such cool dogs!
October 17, 2018 at 4:00 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #7956Thanks, Polona!
Yes, that was the big problem with Omi. He always ran first, so I didn’t have as much time to rehearse cues. Also, we really need a startline, but that’s still a work in progress. I’ll keep working on those cues! Your drills on crosses, especially rear crosses, have sure helped us a lot! 😀
Since we have to travel so far to trials, it would be nice to have a few more clean runs – but I sure would rather have dogs running fast and happily with NQs than plodding with Qs. I’m really happy with both dogs’ attitude – they’re so much fun to run! 😀
Near the top of our list of things to work on are serps, threadles, and pushes. Tonight I set up one of the basic drills and ran 2 sequences with each dog to see what’s going well and what needs improvement. Lyric was getting a bit tired toward the end. She had already done some mat work for RC training before these drills.
October 16, 2018 at 3:21 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #7935Well it was a fun weekend, but pretty hectic. It was a 2-day trial with only 2 runs per day. I ran Lyric and Omi along with 3 dogs belonging to a friend. Two of them don’t really know me, but they were good sports about it. 🙂 They all have different cues, so it was pretty difficult trying to keep everyone straight. Funnily I had more clean runs with the dogs I don’t own…….but then they’re all very experienced agility dogs.
I’m afraid you won’t be very proud of all the missing cues on Lyric and Omi’s runs, but each run had some things I was very happy about…..as well as a list of things to work on. The mats were very nice but different from any surface the dogs have run on before. It took Lyric a bit of time to get used to the footing. I think that’s why she faulted the weaves in her first run. I don’t have video of Omi’s first run, but he was a good boy.
October 12, 2018 at 2:57 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #7869Thanks, Polona!
I’ll work on that with Omi. He’ll be happy – he sure loves his weaves!! 🙂
We’re away at an agility trial until Monday. Have a great weekend! See you next week 🙂
October 10, 2018 at 2:30 am in reply to: Maureen & Omi (3 years) & Lyric (2 years), Papillons, Bermuda #7819Hi Polona,
Welcome back!! Hope you had a great time at AWC. Unfortunately I didn’t get to watch that much, as we had an agility seminar here in Bermuda this weekend. It was a great seminar, though!
We tried various weave exits to give you an idea what’s working and what’s not. Initially the blue tunnel was overlapping the poles just a little; then I pulled it further across (though it’s hard to see in the video). Omi had more trouble weaving to the side of the tunnel than Lyric. 🙂
