We’ve been working on backsides and threadles at home in a small space. Today we were able to go to the larger field. I need to tidy up my cues,,,,,,,but I love the fact that Hudson is really listening.
Here’s a short session with 2 balls, no distractions. Hudson is a bit ambivalent about trading balls, but mostly it works. He will definitely trade the ball for a food reward – but food always trumps toys as a reward. Once the food comes out he generally looks for it in lieu of toys.
Thanks, Polona! Hope your trial went well and you had a great weekend!
Hudson and I tried a combination of multi balls and tunnels. I was happy with Hudson’s speed and engagement. Unfortunately he’s reluctant to drop the ball. He used to be really good about transitioning from one toy to another, but we’ve lost that skill. It’s a long story, but the short version is we enrolled in an online course to teach cooperative toy play. The method really didn’t work for Hudson and we lost skills rather than building new ones. I’ll try working on switching toys separately. Otherwise, I think he had fun 😀
Please ignore the above post. I can’t seem to get the video links to work correctly. I tried to edit the post without success so I’ll repost here.
We’re back home. I just saw your post – I hope your dog is recovering okay.
Hudson and I tried the speed sequence from Lesson one with a couple of variations.
I was away at the American Kennel Club National Agility Championships with Lyric. Lyric did a fine job. She was 7th in Standard and 8th in Jumpers……and we made it to Challengers Round. I thought you might enjoy seeing how she’s doing.
Hope you’re feeling better!
Here’s an update on sits and pivoting. I’m trying to mark stillness on the sits. Moving the treat sure helped with pivoting – thank you!!
Thank you! That makes perfect sense.
We started working on pivoting. We’re getting lots of back-and-forth, but don’t seem to be making much progress on completing the circle.
Okay, thanks, we’ll try that!
Meanwhile, here’s an update on our sits…..with some food toss games thrown in 🙂
Thanks, Polona!
We got to play outside today! 🙂 This was Hudson’s introduction to the curved tunnel. I was proud of his ability to focus with neighbouring dogs barking non-stop. I tried to let Hudson win at tugging. Tossing food on the ground is a bit problematic outdoors. Hudson isn’t great at finding treats, even indoors. After I tossed a couple of treats on the ground outside, his whole focus switched to sniffing for any treats that might have miraculously sprouted.
I hope it’s okay to add a second video. We’ve been working on sits as well. I was having trouble with dropped treats using only one hand. This setup seems to hold Hudson’s attention without the distraction of refilling or dropping treats (I couldn’t manage the clicker as well, though 🙂 ). However, I have the impression that the whole process is making him anxious…..and fidgety. He’s not enjoying this.
Work and weather have made it difficult to train outside lately……but today we finally got to play some chase games
Okay, that makes sense. Thank you!
Between food games and toy games we’ve started to train a few basic skills. I think I’ve kind of screwed up his cone wraps with too much luring. As long as I throw food to the opposite side of the cone Hudson will wrap 360 degrees……but if there’s no food he stops near me and waits for a reward to appear.
Today Hudson took his toys to a fun match. He was happy to play, despite all the distractions 🙂
I think this was better – do you agree? 🙂

Thanks, Polona! Hopefully we can take some of these games outside soon.
Tonight we brought the platform out again. I tried standing, but Hudson was bouncing like a yo-yo. When I kneel you can see him backing off, sitting on the edge of the platform. Clearly I’m doing something wrong. Feeding seems to just encourage him to move – like his dad! The only time he stays still is when I’m not rewarding.
Okay, thanks, we’ll work on that.
Tonight we brought out the toys. Hudson was fine with that 🙂
