Course training, three sessions. Every training I try to find where to put the reward after a turn, but it’s not always easy to choose right spot.
The plan in first session was to reward after a front cross. But we missed the flick and I also misplaced before that. And the front cross didn’t went well. So tried to test what would be best solution for us in that turn.
Session 2 I tried to reward a tight turn and also test if tight turn + rear cross on next jump was better.
Session 3 we ran the course opposite direction.
Looking for both advices on this spesific training/situations. But also more in general – how to plan trainings like this the best way? Typically with three sessions.
Two sessions from yesterday.
1. One jump, fixed start position. It’s the first time I try to place myself behind her (to make my position more neutral for left/right).
2. Verbal discrimination with fixed start position away from the «obstacles». First time she ever had her back against the task like this, so I started easy with just one object at the time. Got some cool repetitions I think. But also some faults of course.
Happy for feedback!
Thank you, I will test and see if I understand what you mean by fixed position!
In the mean time, here’s a quick session from the garden that I had before your answer (a little late with editing and uploading)
It’s hard for here when I’m at the «wrong» side, but may this be a good way to work through it? Would you also use fixed start position here?
Great, then I still have some time for your brilliant input 😁🤓
Two trainings from this week. Testing to put the weaves into the drill. I can see that my own energy was low and not sure if it was the best idea to introduce a totally new thing. But I was inspired to give it a try 😅 How to do better next time?
Then we had a whole training without any real big frustration barking! Great feeling! Builded it up gradually and did the whole course in the last session. Think she was just a little annoyed two places (2.26 and 2.56?) But the course hadn’t too many of theese potentially annoying lines/turns, so I guess that was also a reason it went well😊 But I’m sure you see improvement, ready for anything!
Hi! Two weeks of holiday in Turkey without Zelda. Back now. I’ve read the tips in the last lessons, very useful!
When is the last day of feedback? And what of all the lessons do you think would be most useful for us to focus on?

Busy days at work. Here are two trainings from two different days in one video. Tried to follow your advice from last session. Feels like this could be useful for us? Happy for any feedback and ideas for more like this 😁
Just an extra update, new try today. Got better flow with easier setup + by throwing treats like we did in one of the jump drills we had. Just showing you a few repetitions in this short clip. Extra happy that she managed to seek away from me in that second go around.
Verbal discrimination at our cabin. This is the entire session. I think maybe I was a bit eager/optimistic and made it a bit hard, by adding these two objects from the start.
My plan was:
1. Front feet on target (she also offered hind feet and different stuff, so this was maybe not a good choice by me, if she’s not sure about the task?)
2. Running around object
3. Sit
4. Lay down
Tried to help her a bit at the beginning by showing the two tasks. Did a reset at 01:22. Removed one object to make it easier.
I’m sure this can be useful. What should I do differently for next session to make it better?
April 28, 2025 at 10:10 pm in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #24049Oh, thank you for pointing out those handling things. Will definitely keep that in mind for both situations next time. (I’m sure many of the faults where I loose her in a course are mine, so need to improve this!)
Here’s the training from Sunday.
Started off by wanting to surprise her with a toy in the very first repetition. (00:05) Maybe a bit my fault as well that she ran directly to the toy? But from there I liked this session to 01:02. Felt like she both listened and collected quite well? 45cm for the jump with the turn, so maybe raise next time.
Then testing some different options. Liked the last one with the flick best and back chained with the start.
Then ran the whole course in the third session.
Any observations or advice on the handling or training methods are very much appreciated 😁❤️
And: No time for training at our big field this week. What should I focus on in our backyard you think? (About 15×15 meters)
April 26, 2025 at 8:58 pm in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #24043Friday’s training I tried to mix in both som discrimination-work from lesson 4 and continue working on turns and starts.
The starts are improving – I’m so grateful for your help! ❤️
Discrimination:
First the difference between turning and going forward to the tunnel.(From 00:07) This is a place I could easily have lost her to the tunnel, so felt good. Although I got some barking at first try.
00:39 – lost her
01:22 – really thought about not looking at the other jump and using my shoulder and eyes
01:33 – got to try the reset thing in a setting like this. Smart!
Other than that I tried to reward som nice turns and to try two different lines.
Happy for any feedback!
April 23, 2025 at 7:42 am in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #24024Thank you! Here’s a new try this morning. First session on one jump and rewarding with treats. Second session on the tunnel setup, with longer distance to the jumps than last time. Tried to do this reset-thing with tricks. Better feeling this time, but I’m sure you still have some feedback to make it better next time 😊
April 21, 2025 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #24017Hope your Easter was good! We’re home from the cabin and tested the tunnel and two jumps. Setup ok? Which height would you use?
Two frustrating parts of the training for both of us today: 00:36 to 01:15 and 01:40 to 01:57 in video. Lots of barking, and that affects me as well. I get annoyed and irritated, even though I know it’s my fault and responsibility to make it better 😅💛
I’m sure I could have done it differently/better, so very grateful for any feedback, because this doesn’t feel great. (Although she of course did good things as well!)

April 16, 2025 at 10:46 am in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #23983Oh, and extra question: How would you build up better and more independent outs and ins?
April 16, 2025 at 10:45 am in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #2398200:43 and 01:17: I used my soft turn cue («swing, swing, swing») both places, same cue for both left and right. The idea is just make a soft turn in the direction I handle.
But I’m very open for any thoughts on this. One thing is Zelda and her understanding (and maybe lack of understanding some times), but it’s also very interesting to plan things for next puppy and the best handling system 😊 What would you do in these situations?
April 15, 2025 at 6:35 pm in reply to: Inger & Zelda, field golden retriever, 6 years, Norway #23969Today’s training. Quite a long video to show you everything. To possibly make it easier to give feedback, here’s what I would like you to pay extra attention to:
1. The starts. Should I change something, or continue like this? Tried to walk a bit longer before «ready..» (And do you have an idea why she didn’t start on «go» at 00:11? 😅)
2. The sequencing felt good today! Worked at 50cm. Different handling options two places in the first course. Main problem was the part at 00:50 and 01:38. Very typical issue for us, actually. Especially not turning tight enough at 01:38 and finding a tunnel instead. And also not going to the tunnel with layering. At 01:54 I gave her a «forward» cue to easier run to the tunnel. Feels like this is a issue about turning tight enough and working close to me, and also be able to run independently away from me. That switching?
3. Other comments or advice to give from the sequences?
4. Last session (from 03:48) I wanted to show you some more status on the out and in, as you asked «What would you say is the hardest?» and «Is she reliable with outs in real course situations?»
The answer is no 😂 Both outs and ins could be hard. But out is maybe the hardest actually. If she needs to change her line to take an out or in (as this setup, when she comes directly at the jump), it feels like she needs me to «push/break» her line. She doesn’t fix it on verbals only. It also shows some lack of listening 04:21 (even though my handling could have been clearer maybe) -
