Thank you Polona! She is definitely getting more excited and very barky when it comes to agility! I hadn’t realized she didn’t like the tunnel so much so I will work on that more! And will also try the U sequence with more unpredictability!
We did some of the turns exercises. I know she doesn’t really like these. After the rounds the turn, she does speed up coming out of it, but she goes into the turn much more slowly. Not sure if I should worry about that so much considering if we do a sequence, presumably there’d be some speed already to help going into the wrap (compared to just wrapping a standalone wing from a sit).
Question with the wraps and crazy balls – do you give verbal cues like cik/cap or left/right? I started do that until it got abit too hard for me ? especially as I use a different word for a wrap from behind the wing and the sequence was quite fast and I don’t always know my position with regards to the wings!
Yay thank you! Yes you’re quite right – I seem to separate the training from the games and it shouldn’t be the case. I’ll work on that!
I tried the set up and started with the food throw to get her excited! It works but then I don’t know if she is getting tired (we didn’t do much!) or bored because she learnt the pattern of food throw then jumping, she seems to slow down abit towards the end.
I’ve set it up with only one tunnel as I realized that I could probably squeeze the 3m tunnel in but I don’t have enough sand bags! Buying them now.
Hello!! I loved what you wrote about the rewarding part. I think I need to be better at that – I need to make the reward part more exciting and more of the “long dynamic process” instead of just “reward by throwing one toy, yay! clap! reward with treat from hand”. I need to be less boring and up my energy so she can up hers! ?
We did the crazy balls exercise! Realized I have CCTV for the backyard so I included it as well for a bird’s eye view.
I don’t think we have enough space in the garden to put in all the jumps for the other 2 exercises so it might be a slightly reduced version! Hope that is ok too? If you have ideas on how we can streamline those 2 set ups, that would be helpful! You can see the size of the space I have in the video above.
Thank you for the helpful comments! I will try to film us doing the more dynamic tugging with more “in between” this week.
I tried scrubbing the carpet with the roller ball! She wasn’t as hyped up about it as the brush but she was still very interested and we had a bit of tug as well! Will alternate the roller ball and the brush, and see if there’s anything else I can clean the floor with that she might like!
We did some crazy balls! She does love chasing balls and I take 2 or 3 balls with me when we go on our walks and throw it around a couple of times (she races my older dog to the balls ? not that hard to beat her but I guess the competitive spirit is good!).
We did some shaping as well – trying to get her to toss a toy over her head. She seems confused a bit at one point but looked like she understood that she needed to move her head around the 5 min mark!
I’ve since done another session of this and there is a bigger head throw now. Have also started to shape her to drop a toy in a box which she has now got! So fun!
Ah! I get you now! So not letting her win (if she bites softly) should be done by pulling it away but continuing the chase, instead of pulling the toy up and out of reach. That makes so much more sense! Thank you!!
I’ve been trying the other toy exercises from Lesson 2 while adding a bit of pressure as you have suggested in your last reply! I think in hindsight I might have “mixed” toy and food (see video) and I’m not sure if that’s correct now! I’ve been basically use a non-food tug toy, playing and then rewarding with food. Is this right? Or should I keep them completely separate?
Shortly after I got her, I inadvertently discovered this thing that really drives her nuts while trying to brush fur off the carpet. She loooooooves chasing after the slicker brush on the floor. I can’t understand why but she goes mad and very quickly too! Since then literally anything that brushes against the floor will really get her going (carpet cleaner thing for when she has a pee accident inside the house, any kind of broom or floor cleaning brush or leaf rake). Still figuring out how to use this as a reward!
I just want to add that it’s great to see Luna much pushier these days and demanding of attention by jumping up and literally pushing my butt with her front paws ? Absolutely love it!
Thank you for your feedback and apologies for not having posted since – it’s been a busy week at work ?
Regarding my pulling up during the chase at 0:27, I think I felt like she wasn’t really going for the toy and I pulled it up as a result. In your earlier comments you mentioned that I shouldn’t be afraid to not let her win if I felt her bites were too soft. Did I misunderstand and do it incorrectly? Have I misinterpreted her attempt (ie. she was trying hard and shouldn’t have been “punished” by me pulling the toy up?) Or should I wait until she’s “better” with chasing and biting the toy before I even consider not letting her win when she bites softly?
We’ve worked on the food pouch chasing more – I’ve held off pulling it up! I feel she’s definitely learning how to bite it better and faster!
We’ve also tried the engagement game again as you’ve suggested! She’s jumping up for attention more quickly! Generally outside of training sessions I have found her to be more pushy too – YAY!
I will work on Lesson 2 stuff this week!
Thank you so much for the tips! We tried mixing the food throws with poke me and had some fun!
Managed to do a bit of the food pocket game outside too – not sure if I am doing it right! Do you think she is having difficulty with biting the toy? It is a little “stiff” and flat, and I’m wondering if it is a bit big for her mouth? It’s ok if she is aiming for the handle but when she lunges for the furry part, it almost looks like she can’t grip with her mouth? The idea is for her to bite and hold on to the furry bit yes? Or should I keep at it to see if she does figure out how to grab and hold better?
Oh she doesn’t seem to like it when it’s wet (after dragging it around on the wet grass) ?
We managed to also try the engagement/jump up game! We did this in the backyard as we don’t have someone to film for us when we are on our walks. She’s very good at giving attention when on walks (I rewarded this heavily from the first day I got her!) and I’ve now been rewarding her for being pushy (barking, jumping up) for attention whenever she does it.

Thank you for the feedback! And yay thank you for being so generous with your time – I promise not to send you a full movie to review ?
Good point on the pulling up gesture – I have tried to more gradually increase the height in the video below!
We didn’t get a chance to play outside with the food pocket toy but will do so later this week. We did however work on it more indoors, slowing down the game – let me know if we’re on the right track with her getting a stronger bite.
We also tried the food throw game!
Hi Polona!
So excited that the class has started! We’ve been trying the games and having a lot of fun with them! Here are our videos below. I’ve been using her raw food meals as treats ? as that is what she finds highest in value!
Also, is there a limit to the number or duration of videos we can send to you to look at?
Poke Me Game
Restrain
Food Pouch Toy
Poke Me is one of the food games in the first lesson – the one where you hide food in your hand and wait for the dog to “poke” you.
Your thoughts have reinforced my decision to hold off teaching self control around food (or impulse control in general really) with my new pup who is, because of her nature, already quite “polite”! I’ve been debating it in my head for a while and feeling almost guilty for not training manners (and wanting to encourage her to be naughty actually ?), so thank you for this post!!
