She is 4.5# (2kg) at 9.5 weeks. It is hard to get used to when my first love is Belgians. She is showing more intensity, although I let the sessions go on too long, I’m afraid.

I tried Poke Me again, this time without my hand for her to chase. I still am not silent yet, but she’s definitely trying harder for food. We also did a chase game with a toy — this was the first time she saw this toy. At first she was just chasing, not really grabbing. When she started biting, I tried to let her win, especially when she was putting some effort in. We’ve also been doing sessions with the other dogs, where everyone sits for kibble. She worships the Belgians, so if they do things for kibble, so will she. And, we’ve done more “reward anything” sessions where she’s gotten more and more active in offering behaviors.

We also tried clicking/treating for just about anything.

She’s a papillon x border collie/mudi cross. Border Map? Here are some more games from today. I’m not 100% sure what to do with the Poke Me game. I gave her a piece or two of food when she interacted vigorously with my hand. but maybe I should’ve thrown it. She did a lot better if I moved my hand. If I just was still, she would sit and watch my hand. Is it OK to move around, or should I be aiming for being totally still?

Here’s a cookie toss. I’ve also included a video where I tried rewarding front-feet-on with a tug rather than food to get her more excited. Not totally sure she understood what she was being rewarded for, but she definitely had a good time with the tug.

Silvia suggested letting her watch older dogs do things for food, so we tried that this morning. She watched my food-crazy Belgian do the puzzle game and also uncover something from under a cup. She still was hesitant in public, but I put her in her crate with a full puzzle and she emptied it on her own. I only got the end part on video:

I found a perfect toy for crazy balls for a puppy or a small dog. These are very visible and soft. Worked really well! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077ZFWS23/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Sorry for so many videos at once! I was going to post some this weekend & I am about to go out of town for a few days, so they ended up coming in a rush. No hurry to respond! Here are two more from today, showing where we are with the crazy balls and trying the toy races for the first time. With crazy balls, I am glad to see she is picking it up pretty reliably even though we are outside and mostly running to me. She’s still not sure about dropping it, so I spend a lot of time trying to keep moving while I am waiting for her to drop (and sometimes she drops it and then picks it up again before I can throw another ball). Toy races were mostly good, but you can see she’s never been held by the collar like that before. Yikes with the collar flips! I also couldn’t get her to let go of the toy, which is a good problem to have, but which meant that I spent a lot of time waiting for her to let go. 🙂

Finally, I tried to work on the treat-n-train with some restraint. Vesper, as you can see, really does not seem excited at all (she hadn’t eaten, so she should have been hungry). This is what I mean when I say she seems “off” lately. The puppy had seen the treat-n-train once or twice before at her breeder’s, but this was the first time she’s used it with me. Is there a better way to build drive to the treat-n-train or should I continue doing this?

Vesper did not get as much work over the past week, because the field was very wet. Also, she seems a bit uncomfortable to me & possibly her liver problem is bothering her again? I don’t know. We had bloodwork done last week but I haven’t heard the results yet. Here’s us going to the field yesterday and working on the food toss game and also on getting some drive away from the wing wrap. First time we did the treat toss she would pick up the food and then carry it with her as she caught up to me, then stop and eat it. That’s why I’m waiting to toss the next piece of food. She did get a bit better.

                              Hi Polona,

I have been doing the recall work you suggested with the puppy (now called Fizz). She’s great with the tossed treat games in public. We’ve played it at agility classes with barky dogs and downtown near noisy traffic. That is going well, so no videos of that. Crazy ball is still a bit challenging. If I play it outside with normal balls, she will chase the ball, but not bring it back, and sometimes gets distracted by sniffing (ah, spring time and lots of rabbit poop!). I purchased a bunch of small holee rollers because she seems more likely to grab & bring back items that can also be tugged with.

Here is a long video of us trying to do crazy balls in the training area. She is pretty good about getting the toy (after the first one, which she didn’t pick up), but not really sure about letting it go near me yet.

We tried the Identical Toys game from Unit 5, and that went very well, I think. I used a bungee tug with a small ball.

I have been doing recall to my lap, but she is not sure about bringing the toy with her on the recall. As you can see here, she’ll recall away from the toy to me. Any suggestions?

Yes, she jumped completely over me to take the sock to the couch. Then jumped over me again to get back. 😮 I think I have played this game with every puppy and she is the only one to do that. Even the Belgians didn’t do that. Need to work on that retrieve!!

Yes, that video makes sense. I am used to rewarding as near to the wing as I can get for tight turns, but I can see how we need the speed going away. Our field is finally without snow, so I should be able to start using it soon. It will rain tomorrow, so maybe on Monday? Vesper, alas, is not good with other dogs when food is involved, so I am hesitant to make her jealous like that. But I definitely can try sausage.

Clearly I need to work on the recall to my lap that you mentioned!
