Thanks for the advice! I am trying to decide what to do with his food excitement behavior. At first I encouraged the jump up on me because it’s fine now and I wanted to build his drive. He likes to jump straight up in the air( not in this video), jump on me, and also sit to ask for food. In the future, should I work to switch him more to a more “compression” style wait for reward? I think at some point I won’t want him jumping on me. I was also thinking of isolating the jump up (in the air, not on me) as a “happy” cue. Any thoughts?
No worries! We have been busy with baby puppy stuff. That’s great advice about slowing down the food games. I’ve been working on getting him excited about bigger pieces of food that I’ll be able to drop. I’ve also been doing lots of letting him keep the toy —he likes to bring it to my lap or lay next to me to chew on it. I’m trying to encourage that by rarely taking the toy. Sometimes I’ll tug it gently, or I might just pet him while he plays with it.
I’ve also been working a little bit on ball retrieval. He is happy to chase a ball and bring it back. But he is less crazy about balls than tugs. I have been trying to get him to bring it to my hand (or close by) in exchange for food & then throwing it again.
We have also been doing impro work. He really likes empty plastic bottles and padded mailers. Sometimes we tug, and sometimes we just play soccer with them. It’s nice because it is very easy for me not to care about getting them back or if they get destroyed.

Beginnings of multi-toy game. I’m not running here because I’m trying to avoid him chasing and grabbing me (which is the most fun right now).
Here is one session of him playing with a tug on horse line. It was the first time my older dog was in the yard with us, so he was a little distracted at first. He’s played this 3 or 4 times. You can see that he’s figured out not to let go.
Same game with small tug toys

Restrain + forward focus
Still working on removing the hand more (and I need to switch sides more)
A problem we are having (not really one of the course topics, but I am struggling with it, so I wanted to ask). She is fine with paw targetting when the target is on my body. But she doesn’t want to “hit it” when it is away from my body or on a vertical surface like a wall. Here I am trying to move her away from me a little and on something smaller than wall. As you can see, it is a bit of a mess.
We are making some progress on toy retrieve now that I have found small enough toys for her to carry easily. I will video that later. Is this getting closer to *not* luring the pivot?
Ah, yes, luring for pivots. I *always* get in trouble for that. As a matter of fact, Silvia was also “yelling” at me for doing that. It isn’t anything you said — it’s my bad habit. 😉 I tried to do the elephant reward position you used in your video. Here is her first time seeing it. As you can see, she wants to attack the hand, but she started to figure it out. I had a couple “bad” rewards where I gave her food just after jumping at my hand — I meant to reward foot movement, but I didn’t do fast enough before she jumped my hand. But I think she is learning that the hand can be above her head and it may solves our (my) luring problem with pivoting.
Hi, about the tugging. I don’t usually trade for food, but I do it in the videos to save time. Oops. I will stop doing that. I don’t like pulling the toy away from them at this age and I usually don’t teach a drop-it until I really love how they are tugging. Here’s some work we did on a few problems that showed — she didn’t like me touching her while tugging, or grabbing her harness.
PS Ignore crazy hair — I was just out jogging.
Here’s where we are starting with the ‘in-between’ work building toward a retrieve. You can see that sometimes she’ll carry the toy along when she follows me, but sometimes she drops it. The chase part is more interesting to her, I think. I didn’t really get a chance to sneak up on her holding a toy, etc, because she was so focused on chasing me.
Here’s more recent pivot video.
Hi,
Yes, we are starting with pivoting and also more paw targeting. Here’s a video
With “touch” I did one quick session before, but she hadn’t really practiced it. So, it was a combo of learning by imitation and some pre-existing knowledge. I was trying to do something that wouldn’t require a lot of movement from my old dog.
I can definitely work on 2 toys, not always grabbing, and “in between” stuff.A question: as her confidence is coming up (yay!), she’s also less likely to bring a toy back to me to chew on in my lap. She’ll run to dead/tossed toy, but either she won’t bring it back or she might try to get it and bypass me. Which toy game should I work on to help build the foundation for a retrieve?
