I also re read your last message and noted the point you mentioned about the goal being to get him fired up enough that he starts to switch on just approaching the first obstacle. Should I start doing huge jackpot after the 1 jump for now so he associates this first obstacle as a huge exciting thing?
Sorry for the double message!
Hey Polona!
Apologies my tripod was in the car but I had a few minutes to play with Dio and wanted to record so its vertical.
Anyway, I did some warmup games and got him excited and got him to hop over one jump then rewarded with a tug which I think went pretty well!
Any feedback here is appreciated and I’m also looking for any pointers on some specifics you want to see or things I can add to our routine to get him excited outside of the ring before we go in. I think the hardest part is that I need to get him excited before we get in the ring and then maintain that engagement while we walk to the start jump etc. I mean, its also hard when there’s like 85 dogs around outside of the ring but at least there I have toys and treats etc.)
Also, I bought Dio a seminar spot before I had identified these issues this weekend. I sold one of our spots but we have one on Sunday. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but its at a location where we haven’t been before so its a good opportunity to train in a new place. Is there anything specific you recommend us working on during our turns there?
Warmup video HERE
Thank you so much again!
Thank you Polona!
Okay I have 5 videos here.
1 quick warm up with treat throws and some squeaky balls and a stay HERE
a second warm up where we incorporated a jump HERE
Attempts to introduce him to the treat pocket toy HERE
-The treat pocket toy didn’t go super great so looking for some pointers here for sure! in all fairness my coach showed me a bit right before this so he may of been a little over it by this point.
Some general teeter training Here
then we just did 1 quick sequence at the end of class, we had to work through some lack of interest but at the end he really turned it on. his start was okay but he seemed disinterested and sniffed a bit. its HERE
I think this gives you some visibility on training somewhere else and our process – honestly i get a little flustered easily and think i need to train with more intention. I’m often forgetting what pocket my treats are in or where his toy is etc and think I havent been great at rewarding precisely when I should. But its all here so let me know your thoughts and Im keen to fix all my bad habits and have more fun with this guy.
This was all filmed in one of my agility classes. i basically didnt do any of the course material and used it as an excuse to train in a new area with distractions around. I have also been incorporating more of the treat throws etc into our daily walks and life. I also think the word “reeeeeaaaaaaady” has started to turn him anxious so Im interested to hear your thoughts if I should just ask for a simple stay at a start line or find a different word etc.
Hey Polona!
Apologies for the delay. My other dog Felix was healed up so I’ve been spending lots of time with him and was rehabbing a bit and it took a ton of time! we also had the Canadian open I was focused on (wow that was fun) but now we are back! We have been working on some of the exercise strategies from topic 5 in the background but I haven’t recorded any of those.
We did start up again yesterday though with some of the leading arm exercises.
I have 2 videos here from different sessions ( I realized just now that I run out of frame in some of them but you can still see him just cross behind me in time lol)
Leading arm 1: https://youtu.be/R7l1C2wF8Vo
Leading arm 2: https://youtu.be/t3opAkeQS8g
These seem to be going mostly fine I think? Let me know and I’ll start moving onto the harder ones! We have done it a bit with a toy in the opposite hand but I haven’t recorded that yet and Id say he’s successful about 75% of the time and getting better!!
Hey Polona,
We’ve had a blast with toy swapping: https://youtu.be/rx4UHCHBjwk
We are still revisiting most of the old games – I’m running out of hiding spots though so he tends to win hide n seek pretty quickly 😛
Awesome Polona,
We took the crazy balls advice and it made it much more crisp. its a fun regular game we play now.
I’ll work on his passive stay next time I take him to a brewery (good excuse) The shaping is something I am still working on so I’ll keep you posted there.
In the mean time we started the 4th topic and started the “to my hand”. I’ve always used “bring it here” for this but this was my first time doing it for Dio so I can change that if it doesn’t work well: https://youtu.be/VII9Jo9sd7s
Let me know what you think (I haven’t cut the grass in awhile so his little hops are super super cute haha).
Hey Polona,
I also did some luring work and some different stays.
Luring: https://youtu.be/vgzauSKkzkE
Active stay https://youtu.be/pmIO_ORiM2E
Relaxed stay https://youtu.be/dVfvqchg8MU
On this last one I just worked on getting a little farther away and raising the duration: https://youtu.be/vgTEa4YPV3E
I feel like he has a pretty strong stay… but I want it to keep getting better and better because a good startline is super important to me, I know how hard it is without one lol.
Thanks Polona,
I filmed these before the weekend but then went camping and forgot to upload, apologies for the delay.
I worked on just getting him to associate the cone with treats for now and I think he started to get a handle on it. Watching the video i feel like im pretty late with all of my signals to him so I have to tighten that up.
The cone game is here: https://youtu.be/u9WKA-W-wbs
next time we will work on getting him to go around it and all that fun stuff
I also did a crazy balls revisit alternating with some food and the balls Here: https://youtu.be/MwZGj80otNQ
I guess I have also unknowingly shaped a few things (down and a hand target) but I never filmed those haha. The cone game and eventually wrapping is something i struggled on with my other dog though so focusing here would probably be beneficial for me!
Hey Polona,
Thanks for the crazy balls tip, I missed the assignment a bit there… but we still had fun, we’ll do it the proper way and mix it up like you mentioned.
Aside from that I started working with a cone like you did in your video. Right before this we were doing some toy switching to jazz him up a bit but we may of overdone it and he was tired pretty early. Video here: https://youtu.be/DF6IVm4Yldg
Either way he started to get the hang of going near the cone for treats, I think I wasn’t exciting enough to keep him engaged though. Any tips there are appreciated or if you have something else to recommend we work on that would be great.
As for other learning sessions we just started our foundations agility class yesterday. that consisted of food throws, toy switching, recalls, and hand targets.
I also wanted to ask if you think the cone wrap you showed in your shaping video would be a good start for us? – Is the goal of that to get them comfortable with the cone and then eventually have them wrapping around it ?
It makes sense to me but I just wanted to make sure there something that may be better to learn first.
Thanks Polona!
Hey Polona,
My turn to apologize for the delay, my other dog Felix had an incident last friday – hes recovering fine 🙂 – but I’ve put a bunch of my dedicated training time to keeping that guy comfortable. I’ve still been working hard with Didi though, just havent been recording at all.
Anyway we have a crazy balls session here: https://youtu.be/_jAqBKrVCm4
He got more engaged after he pooped (yeah sorry he pooped halfway through lol)
I have to say the first couple times I did this he seemed more excited and engaged. I think he’s starting to like certain toys more than others… and maybe I shouldn’t wear flip flops when dog training.
We also practiced some recalls on the side so here’s that for bonus: https://youtu.be/6OQKhfJLMJw
Awesome thanks Polona!
We got his long handled squid tug toy back now and it takes this to a whole new level. He absolutely loves it and the longer handle makes it easier to adjust the pressure in smaller increments. He now reliably drops the toy and chases after me if I hide so I think things are going well. We’ll continue playing this game and will move onto the 5 balls game.
Still having a blast!!!
Hey Polona,
I think we did better on this longer Chase and tug session here: https://youtu.be/SJyxHLC-LWk
We also had some good in between steps and I was able to get him to drop the toy and check me out etc.
When I was creeping towards him I got stung by a bee on my hand so excuse any extra franticness haha.

Thanks Polona,
These 2 versions felt better but when watching them I think there’s lots of improvement to come yet.
I feel like when I try to tone down the play and get calmer he starts losing interest, im keeping tension on it but i feel like he start letting go:
This one felt a bit better and we had what I think is a pretty good “in between” near the end, i got to run away and hide for a bit and he dropped his toy to come check me out:
I forgot to send over a video of our focus game,
We didnt have great success here, I cant seem to get his attention for more than 1 of these. even if I get him to sit once, there’s no way he’ll do it again until we move somewhere else and I ask for it again. I think that just means he’s doing it as he sees fit but any advice there would be appreciated!
Here’s our attempted focus game lol: https://youtu.be/03MSZpk0FTY
